What makes college really special are all of the sacred and epic traditions. As a college student, these traditions help bring everyone together in a sense of community, boost school spirit, and offer even more reasons to party. College is indeed challenging and must be taken seriously. Though, there are times for students to let loose and get wild for the sake of their alma mater. Here are the 8 most awesome college traditions of all time.
1. UCSB HALLOWEEN AT ISLA VISTA
Deemed the “Biggest College Party in California”, and most likely the wildest Halloween celebration of any college in the country. Up to 40,000 students and non-students flood the unincorporated, beachside community of Isla Vista to dress up, trick or treat, and party for an entire weekend. The Halloween festivities began in the 1970’s and has exploded with popularity since.
2. MIRROR LAKE JUMP AT OHIO STATE
To kick off the first football game against their rivals, Michigan State, 10,000 plus students surround Mirror Lake the Tuesday before game day. Despite the freezing cold temperatures, all the students plunge into the lake and cheer on their school. Faculty attempted to ban the wet nonsense, which resulted in many protests and two nights of jumping into the lake. Nothing will stop these students from giving up this cold custom.
3. ASU UNDIE RUN
Not only is this the largest lingerie party, but also the biggest charity event on campus. Over 20,000 students flock together, strip into their undergarments, and run freely. They give away the clothes on their backs, plus any other clothes and non-perishable foods that they donate. On average, close to 5 tons of clothing and 2 tons of food are contributed. There’s nothing better than getting naked for a good cause!
4. STREAKING THE LAWN AT UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA
A major landmark at this university is its huge, beautiful lawn. Signs surround the lawn informing students and visitors to keep off so the grass stays green and lush. Since the 1930’s, before graduation students must streak across the 740-foot lawn (usually at night), kiss the statue of Homer, and streak all the way back. Many watch as the streakers sprint, also known as “lawnies”, and make their naked efforts even more embarrassing by shining a spotlight on them.
5. SEXPOWERGOD AT BROWN
The Brown Queer Alliance transforms the Alumnae Hall into a raging, flamboyant, costume and dance party – for homosexuals, heterosexuals, and anyone who is looking to explore their sexuality. The event is classified as a “raunchy lingerie party”, where attendees dress in sexy costumes, watch aerial art group performers, dance to DJs, and more. This tradition is so special that only 400 people are allowed on the guest list, with tickets costing up to $25 per person. Talk about exclusive.
6. KNOX COLLEGE FLUNK DAY
To celebrate the coming of Spring, Knox College surprises its students by cancelling all classes and meetings for a day of fun. The date is kept a secret while students attempt to predict this magical day. On Flunk Day, everyone is woken at 6 am by the ringing of the Old Main bell. The day is filled with music, mud pits, foam parties, sports games against professors, comedy shows, and free lunch, not to mention explicit partying and mayhem. Best surprise party ever.
7. VIRGINIA TECH CADET VS CIVILIAN SNOWBALL FIGHT
A fire alarm sounds off the first big snowfall of the year, and thousands of students storm the drill field to rejoice. Like a medieval combat, students and faculty battle in a massive snowball fight. Though some leave with bloody noses, this tradition still thrives.
8. MICHIGAN MUD BOWL
Known as “The Dirtiest Tradition in College Football”, Sigma Alpha Epsilon fills their lawn with mud to challenge the many other frat bros in a slippery football tournament. Since the 1930’s, this mud fest has been a riot during every homecoming weekend. And lucky for the frat dudes, two chosen sororities get to play during halftime.
