college roommates

Dear Roommate…

There are so many things I want to say to you. Together we have laughed and cried. Together we grew into adults. We experienced a lot of firsts together. Relationships, heartbreak, experiments both in and out of the classroom, successes and failures. We have loved each other, leaned on each other, and fought like enemies at times.

First I want to apologize. For a lot of things.

I’m sorry for using all your toothpaste when I ran out.

I’m sorry for eating your food in the refrigerator clearly marked with your name on it.

I’m sorry for playing my music too loud while you were trying to study.

I’m sorry for borrowing your clothes without asking.

I’m sorry for not paying the utility bill on time.

I’m sorry for leaving my dirty dishes in the sink.

I’m sorry I forgot to replace the toilet paper.

I’m sorry for having company over without letting you know.

I’m sorry for using all the hot water when I shower.

These things I did that I now need to apologize for were not malicious or out of spite. Just mistakes that I learned from while transitioning into adulthood. No one really tells you how to pay the bills or do your own laundry beforehand. It was all a realization that the world did not revolve around me. I’m glad I figured that out.

More importantly, I want to thank you.

Thank you for always letting me cry on your shoulder when I was feeling homesick.

Thank you for helping me move on through heartbreak.

Thank you for keeping my secrets and trusting me with yours.

Thank you for making me laugh all the time.

Thank you for being my partner in crime and getting into trouble with me.

Thank you for always having my back.

Thank you for watching funny internet videos with me all night.

Thank you for doing my laundry.

Thank you for spending the night in with me when everyone else was going out.

Thank you for helping me grow into myself.

Now that college is over and I look back at our time as roommates, I wouldn’t trade those two years of living together for anything. Although sometimes things did get rough, we really had a blast. We may not keep in touch often anymore, but I will forever be thankful for our friendship and I will forever cherish the memories we made.

Sincerely,

Your Roommate
