UH Manoa is located in the beautiful Manoa valley on the island of Oahu. The town is surrounded by hills and lush green vegetation year round providing all with an array of outdoor activities to enjoy. Students living in Manoa can hike, bike, climb, check out waterfalls, or spend a day at the beach snorkeling or surfing. Manoa is a great place for students to live.
We spoke with Antonina Javier, a student at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, here’s what she has to say:
Name: Antonina Javier
Hometown: Bakersfield, California
Why did you choose to attend UH Manoa?
Coming from a rural farming community in California, I was interested in the diversity of students and cultures that UHM is renowned for. Also, since I major in Marketing, choosing UHM was an educational choice. The Shidler College of Business is consistently ranked in the top twenty business schools by U.S News and World Report. It also helps that UHM is located in one of the most beautiful places I can imagine.
What do you like most about UH Manoa?
UHM has quality professors. Students have to do some research to find the good ones, but when found they are a wealth of information. Many of my professors have had rich, diverse work experience. Making them knowledgeable in both the subject and in real world applications.
What do you like most about living in Manoa?
What I love most about living in Manoa is the multiple study location options. Within a few blocks of campus there are multiple unique restaurants and coffee shops that service students. They are typically open late and offer free Wi-Fi.
What do you like to do for fun/extracurricular/hobbies?
Oahu is bursting with outdoor activity. I love rock climbing, hiking, and snorkeling.
Do you have any advice for incoming freshman?
One thing I wish I learned earlier is the importance of preparation and going into the semester well-informed. If class syllabuses are available, read them before you’re first day. Knowing the amount of work you’ll be given, important dates, and what is expected of you will keep you from falling behind. Or at least making catching up easier.
